What qualifies as compassionate or compelling circumstances?

Compassionate or compelling circumstances are situations beyond your control that seriously impact your ability to continue your studies. ALG understands life can be unpredictable and considers the following:

  • Serious illness or injury: You will need a medical certificate from an Australian-registered medical practitioner stating how long you were unable to attend classes.
  • Bereavement of close family members: This could include parents or grandparents. A death certificate may be required where possible.
  • Major upheaval or natural disaster: For example, events in your home country requiring emergency travel that disrupt your studies.
  • Traumatic experiences: This could include witnessing or being the victim of a serious crime or being involved in a serious accident. A police or psychologist report may be required.

To apply for a deferral or suspension, it’s essential to provide relevant documentation that meets these criteria. If you are unsure about your situation or the documentation needed, feel free to reach out for support—we are here to help!

For more detailed information, please refer to the Deferral, Suspension and Cancellation Policy and Procedure.
